Bo- Kaap

The Bo-Kaap is one of the oldest residential suburbs in Cape Town and is situated on the slopes of Signal Hill. This part of Cape Town has brightly painted colorful houses and steeply paved streets. It’s something truly spectacular to this beautiful city filled with so much love and vibrant culture. 


History

The Bo –Kaap is also known as the Cape Malay Quarter, which originates back to 1760s when many houses were built and leased to slaves. These slaves were brought from many South East Asia countries namely Malaysia and Indonesia and the rest of Africa to work in the Cape. Many families situated in Bo-Kaap have been living there for generations and is a significant part of our cultural heritage.


Bo-Kaap Museum






The Bo-Kaap hosts one of the oldest buildings which is currently being used as the Bo-Kaap Museum.  This Museum is the best place to discover and grasp the real history of the area and a glimpse into the life of a typical Malay family.
Auwal Mosque

The Bo-Kaap district host many mosques. The Auwal Mosque is the most popular mosque in this area. This mosque was built in 1794 and is the first mosque ever built in South Africa. The Muslim leader is ought to have written numerous copies of the holy Quran completely by memory while imprisoned on Robben Island.
